Writing by inmates...
I`d just like to voice my opinion if I may. I`m serving time in a Texas prison.
When I first got here we were allowed to write other inmates.
Now we can`t. They said the reason as being insecurity. What happen to our mailroom staff that were hired to proof-read letters in and out for security concerns?
We are locked up with others, and in some cases bond or become friends with those we live with. Then one dy one or the other is transferred. Texas expects us to just forget about the friendships. Its hard, we become dependent on our friend we meet on the inside.
Before this new rule that inmates could not write eachother, I met a young lady in another State, also in prison. We wrote each other at least 4 times a week for 2 ½ years. We had plans to meet after our release, and decided we were dedicated to eachother. Even our familes knew of our plans. Then came the rule change.
Something to think about: If you took half of the 150 thousand plus inmates in Texas, and that half wrote just one letter a week to another inmate, and that inmate wrote in return, think of the millions of dollars the postal service would generate a month. And that’s just one State, one half of the inmates and one letter a week. Our postal service would not be in the situation its in right now.
I believe inmates should be allowed to write anyone, provided they do not write threating letters. I believe mailroomstaff should do the jobs they were originally hired to do.
Instead something is taken away from the inmates to simply make someone elses job easier.
Those rules don`t only bring harm to the inmates, look at the harm being done to the economy.
I`ll get off of the soap-opera and close now.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Rock Wilson
